How to configure AVG Internet Security to work with PhotoSync?

How to configure AVG Internet Security to work with PhotoSync?

The following steps has to be taken to run PhotoSync Companion with AVG Internet Security. This walkthrough was created on Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit with AVG Internet Security 2011. Unfortunately you have to add the settings manually because we did not manage to get the application based firewall settings working because the mDNS related packages have been blocked even with the correct Bonjour Application Settings. This walkthrough creates custom service settings which worked perfectly with PhotoSync:

  1. Open the Firewall settings. In Profiles select your network (this should be in bold typeface, in this example it is: "Small home or office network")
  2. Select "System services" in the network

System services settings of AVG Internet Security Firewall

  3. In the "User defined system rules" section click on the "Manage user system rules" button to add your own system rule for PhotoSync. A new window will appear:

    Add new user-defined rule

  4. Click on the "Add" button and add the first of three rules that have to be defined for PhotoSync
  5. Add a rule for Apple Bonjour mDNS services. You can change the values by clicking on the blue hyperlinks in the rule detail transcription. The necessary values for the first rule are:

    protocol: UDP
    direction: Both ways
    local port(s): 5353
    remote port(s): All ports (0-65535)
    remote address(es): All Networks

First of three rules for Apple Bonjour mDNS

Enter a rule detail name (e.g. Bonjour mDNS) and click OK.
  6. Click on the "Add" button and add the second of three rules that have to be defined for PhotoSync
  7. Add a rule for Apple Bonjour mDNS services. You can change the values by clicking on the blue hyperlinks in the rule detail transcription. The necessary values for the first rule are:

    protocol: UDP
    direction: Both ways
    local port(s): All ports (0-65535)
    remote port(s): 5353
    remote address(es): All Networks

Second of three rules for Apple Bonjour mDNS

Enter a rule detail name (e.g. Bonjour mDNS) and click OK.
  8. Click on the "Add" button and add the third of three rules that have to be defined for PhotoSync
  9. Add a rule for PhotoSync Companion transfer services. You can change the values by clicking on the blue hyperlinks in the rule detail transcription. The necessary values for the first rule are:

    protocol: TCP
    direction: In
    local port(s): 35722
    remote port(s): All ports (0-65535)
    remote address(es): All Networks

Third of three rules for PhotoSync transfer

Enter a rule detail name (e.g. PhotoSync) and click OK.
  10. Save your three rules by clicking OK and leave the AVG settings.

Save user defined AVG firewall settings

With all these steps done, you should be able to use PhotoSync and PhotoSync Companion to move files from your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch to your Windows PC and vice versa.
